I
have used mask-making as a means of personal exploration and community
development with individuals, families, schools, organizations,
and communities. I discovered the power of the mask while working
in theatre, and ever since have been fascinated by the transformation
that occurs when people put on a mask or make their own mask. I
am convinced by the extent to which it has aided my own sense of
personal development: I have found mask-making to be a very effective,
very useful medium for self–healing.
As an artist I wholeheartedly embrace
the concept of community arts projects, because I passionately believe
that people connect powerfully
through the creation of art. The process of learning and celebrating
creativity opens doors within our minds, changing our perceptions
and allowing for new possibilities. This process enhances and expands
our vision of alternative approaches to living and sense of possibilities
for social justice, peace, and personal joy.

I derive great satisfaction from fostering and supporting these potentials for
individual and community development. In my community project concepts
I strive to integrate the arts, with self- and community development, by
drawing on and building on the principles of education, culture, spirituality,
with the ultimate intention of helping shape a community that shapes itself.

Workshops
are accessible to all and the technique of construction accommodates
many
levels of ability, and is therefore ideal for art projects
with diverse communities. People who are intimidated by artistic
expression are by contrast willing to engage with my techniques
of construction, due to the tactile nature of the materials
used and due to the familiarity of these materials. I am constantly
surprised how people expand and explore the possibilities of
the materials. The different construction techniques can be
combined with any of the mask workshop concepts. Mask work
integrates well with other mediums such as theatre dance, song
and storytelling. My espoused aims of working with a community,
school, or group are realized jointly by collaborating with
participants, community leaders, and teachers, based on their
background, knowledge, and vision.
Masks are a primary form of expression, common to all cultures. They are an ancient
and evocative art form rooted in the traditional celebrations, ceremonies and
rites of passage. In implementing this medium of creative expression, participants
are moved to create rich interpretations of their own personal and cultural stories.
Through exploration of mosaic and mask-making techniques,
I support my main passion in life – fostering community, communication and creativity
through art.
The Gallery pages include photos of previously conducted workshops, which demonstrate
the possibilities that mask-making can awaken. |
